China's breathtaking island paradise -- Hainan

Literally meaning 'South of the Ocean', Hainan Island is located at the southernmost part of China. It is China's smallest province and also its largest island, with the same latitude as Hawaii, thus it is known as the 'Eastern Hawaii'. Nanshan Kwan Yin Statue
Part of the Sanya Nanshan Buddhism Cultural Tourism Zone, this statue, as the Statue of Liberty in New York, symbolises peace, wisdom and mercy. The statue, which is the incarnation of Kwan Yin Bodhisattva, the goddess of compassion and mercy, is made of white alloy and rises 78 meters high. Its front side represents Kwan Yin holding sutra that symbolises wisdom; the right side showing her holding prayer beads which symbolises her compassion; the left side showing her holding a lotus flower which symbolises peace.



Dongzhai Harbour Mangrove Natural Reserve Area.
This is the largest and the first mangrove natural reserve area in China located in the northeast of Haikou City. With an area of 3337.6 hectares, it is a typical tropical jungle surrounded by the mangrove tree family. It is also called 'heaven for birds' as 159 species of birds inhabit the reserve, including rare migratory birds.




Temple of Five Lords
Located approximately 5km from the Haikou City, this temple (which is called Five Officials' Temple or Wugong Ci in Chinese) was built during the reign of Emperor Wanli in the Ming Dynasty in the 13th century to commemorate the five famous officials – Li Deyu, Li Gang, Zhao Ding, Li Guang, and Hu Quan who were banished to Hainan during the Tang and Song dynasties. It is famous among tourist for its attractive ancient architectural complex that evokes a sense of peace, tranquility and beauty.



Tomb of Hai Rui
Situated in the western outskirts of Haikou City, this tomb represents the people's esteem towards Hai Rui, an upright and uncorrupted official who lived in the 15th century. Rated as a key cultural relic preservation of Hainan province, the tomb boasts of a breathtaking scenery. Enter the tomb garden and you will be greeted by pines, coconut palms and sweet lotus that make the garden tranquil. There are also stone statues of lions, goats and horses.



Nanshan Buddhist Cultural Park
This is a gigantic ecological park focusing on the Buddhist culture. Be blown away by such attractions as the Non-Dualisma Gate, which was built with an architectural style of the Northern and Southern dynasties; Charity and Saviour Park; and the Good Luck Park which boasts of a blend of landscaping styles of various countries. There is also the Longevity Valley with incredible natural formations demonstrating the culture of fortunes and longevity.



Wenbifeng Taoism Park
Visit this new cultural scenic tourist attraction, which is the only legal Taoist Temple in Hainan Island. This is where the Wenbi Peak, the symbol of civilisation in Hainan, is located and the birthplace of Taoism in south China.
